Braided Packing

Braided packing is the sealing interface between rotating or reciprocating shafts and valve stems and the equipment housing — controlling fugitive emissions and process fluid leakage while allowing controlled motion. ATSCO Sales & Service supplies premium braided valve packing and shaft packing engineered to meet the leak detection requirements of industrial facilities throughout Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada.

Graphite-based braided packing remains the preferred choice for high-temperature valve stem sealing, particularly on gate valves, globe valves, and butterfly valves in steam, boiler feedwater, and refinery service. Expanded flexible graphite packing provides exceptional thermal stability from cryogenic temperatures to over 1,200°F, with the low friction coefficient necessary to prevent stem galling and minimize actuator torque requirements.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) braided packing is the standard for chemical service applications where aggressive acids, caustics, and solvents would attack conventional fiber packing. PTFE packing offers excellent chemical resistance across a broad pH range and is compliant with FDA regulations for use in food processing, pharmaceutical, and clean-in-place (CIP) applications common in Utah food and beverage facilities.

Aramid fiber packing (Kevlar®-based) is engineered for abrasive service where slurries, crystalline solids, or erosive fluids would rapidly cut through softer packing materials. Aramid packing is the preferred choice for pump shaft sealing on centrifugal pumps handling mine tailings, paper stock, and industrial slurries across Rocky Mountain mining and processing operations.
